We’re excited to announce a brand-new feature in 1Optic GIS: polygon support!
Until now, our GIS plugin for Grafana has focused on giving you real-time insights into your mobile network using point and cell-level visualizations. With polygon support, we’re taking things a big step further. You can now overlay custom regions directly onto your network maps — enabling more powerful, flexible, and contextaware analysis.
Why polygons matter
Polygons allow you to define and visualize areas instead of just individual points. This makes it possible to:
Overlay administrative regions such as cities, districts, or states.
- Mark custom operational zones like coverage areas, sales territories, or maintenance regions.
- Highlight areas of interest for troubleshooting or capacity planning.
- Compare network KPIs across meaningful geographical boundaries instead of arbitrary grids

How it works
With our first MVP release, users can upload and display custom polygon data in standard formats (e.g., GeoJSON, shapefiles converted to GeoJSON). Once uploaded, polygons appear directly in the 1Optic GIS layer system, and you can combine them with existing network data for seamless visualization.
Polygons are fully integrated with the 1Optic GIS filtering system, meaning you can drill down into specific areas and correlate them with live network metrics. Whether you want to see accessibility KPIs for a city, or outage distributions in a province, polygon layers make it intuitive and visually clear.
What’s next
Polygon support opens the door for even more advanced features. Upcoming iterations will include:
- Automatic polygon aggregation based on KPI values.
- Linking polygon layers with TripAiku for issue correlation
